Russian Attacks Leave Kherson Without Heating; Naftogaz Supplies Thousands of Heaters.
Kherson Endures Heating Crisis Following Russian Strikes
According to TSN.ua: Russian forces continue to target the Kherson Thermal Power Plant (TPP) with artillery and drones. These attacks, which began in early December 2025, have forced the plant to shut down, cutting off central heating for over 40,500 households. A further assault on the city's heat generation facility on December 17th by Russian invaders exacerbated the heating crisis. This relentless targeting of civilian energy infrastructure is a hallmark of the ongoing war.
Naftogaz Mobilizes to Aid the City
On January 2, 2026, occupying forces struck Kherson's heat generation facility again, disrupting heating and causing a partial blackout in the Dnipro district. In response to this dire situation, Ukraine's National Joint Stock Company 'Naftogaz of Ukraine' has launched an aid initiative for the city. Naftogaz has already delivered:
- 1,000 electric heaters
- 750 gas heaters along with gas cylinders
This week, the Naftogaz Group plans to deliver an additional 950 gas heaters with cylinders to the city. This effort is intended to support Kherson's residents through the winter cold in the absence of a functioning central heating system. The situation underscores the severe humanitarian impact of the war, particularly during winter months when access to heating is critical for survival.
The crisis in Kherson highlights the grave consequences of military actions on civilian populations, especially amid winter conditions. The loss of heat due to attacks on critical infrastructure directly threatens lives. While initiatives like Naftogaz's distribution of heaters provide vital immediate relief, a lasting solution requires a comprehensive approach and the restoration of damaged infrastructure.
