An Expert Explains Who Controls the Power Cuts in Kharkiv.
Who is Responsible for the Electricity Blackouts in Kharkiv
According to Novyny.live: Volodymyr Tsybulko clarified that the schedules for power outages are created by the national operator, NEC 'Ukrenergo', based on directives. The local distribution company, JSC 'Kharkivoblenergo', is then responsible for implementing these cuts on the ground. He stressed that the municipal authorities have no direct control over these decisions. The Kharkiv region is currently required to reduce its electricity consumption by 30%.
“The city mayor's office does not control the switch. It only tries to minimize the consequences of the switch that energy workers are forced to turn off due to a nationwide power deficit.” – Volodymyr Tsybulko
The power situation has also been addressed by Ukraine's Minister of Energy, Denys Shmyhal. Furthermore, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with regional leaders to discuss the problems related to the electricity blackouts. These high-level discussions underscore the severity of the crisis and the need for coordinated action at all levels to improve the electricity supply.
The blackouts in Kharkiv are part of a nationwide issue caused by a capacity deficit within Ukraine's energy grid. The mandated 30% reduction in consumption is a necessary, if drastic, measure aimed at stabilizing the situation in the energy sector. This energy crisis is a direct consequence of Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine, which has targeted critical infrastructure.
The meetings at the state leadership level highlight the importance of adapting to these new, challenging conditions and the necessity of supporting the population during this difficult time.
