Forgotten words of Ukrainian: which indigenous terms the Soviet regime tried to erase

According to ТСН: Ukrainian linguists draw attention to little-known but characteristic words that were displaced by the Soviet regime from everyday speech. Many of these words disappeared for long years, despite being natural and organic to the Ukrainian language.

Gorodyna

The term "gorodyna" was used to refer to the harvest from a garden or household plot. Over time, the Soviet regime replaced it with "vegetables," although there are other variants in the Ukrainian language, such as "yaryna."

Osonnia

This word describes an open, sunlit space. It has a unique melody and imagery that does not exist in the Russian language.

Robitnia

This was the name given to a room or workshop intended for making or repairing items — from factories to workshops. This word can be partially found in the names of modern Ukrainian brands.

Linguists emphasize that the revival of these words enriches the Ukrainian lexicon and helps to restore the linguistic heritage that was attempted to be destroyed over decades.

Recently, an 11-year-old Ukrainian girl in a school in the Finnish city of Espoo was forced to perform the song "Kalinka" during music class. This sparked outrage from the girl's mother and the entire Ukrainian community, raising serious questions about the unacceptability of normalizing the culture of an aggressor state in Finland.

Problems with returning displaced Ukrainian words demonstrate how deeply cultural and linguistic changes can affect a nation's identity. Meanwhile, incidents in other countries highlight the importance of respecting the cultural traditions and history of each nation, especially in the context of wars and cultural conflicts that leave their mark on new generations.
