Heating Crisis in Kyiv: Infrastructure Damage Leaves 3,000 Apartment Buildings Without Heat.
Kyiv's Heating Crisis Deepens as Infrastructure Damage Worsens
According to TSN.ua: On January 21, 2023, approximately 3,000 multi-story apartment buildings in Kyiv remained without heating due to severe damage to the city's energy infrastructure. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that utility services managed to restore heat to 270 buildings overnight. This crisis is part of a wider pattern of attacks on Ukraine's civilian energy grid, which have intensified during the winter months.
Widespread Power Outages Compound the Crisis
The situation in the capital is further exacerbated by widespread power cuts, with roughly 60% of Kyiv left without electricity following recent Russian strikes. In total, around 4,000 buildings in the city are currently without central heating. Municipal crews continue to work around the clock to restore essential services to residents.
The lack of heating during a harsh winter period poses severe challenges for Kyiv's inhabitants, especially given the freezing temperatures. The ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure highlight the system's vulnerability, which could lead to further significant social and economic consequences for the population.
'Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and to use alternative heating sources responsibly during this state of emergency.' Vitali Klitschko, Mayor of Kyiv
