Kyiv is expecting 20-hour power outages: when will the restrictions begin

According to ТСН: Kyiv may face a difficult situation with power outages very soon. This will happen if the air temperature drops to -5 to -10° Celsius.

Oleg Popenko, head of the Utility Consumers Union, noted that in the capital, light outages for 20-22 hours a day are possible in just a few weeks if the energy situation does not stabilize.

“The reality of Kyiv will be that during the upcoming frosts of -5 to -10 degrees, which we are promised in a week or two, Kyiv will be without light for 20-22 hours,” Popenko warned.

The expert added that the capacity of the substation near Kyiv is minimal. The internal generation of the region only meets 20-25% of the demand, while the electricity deficit is about 70%.

Popenko also pointed out that in the event of new attacks, “we will use those 20-25%.”

“But at a temperature of -10°, these 20-25% will turn into 10%,” the expert explained.

He stressed that currently there is no way to deliver electricity to Kyiv through other routes, and the supply of new transformers could take from six months to a year. Popenko described the situation that may arise in the capital as “severe.”

Earlier, Oleksiy Kucherenko, the first deputy head of the committee of the Verkhovna Rada on energy and communal services, stated that Kyiv is expecting 15-hour power outages because the electrical substation near Kyiv was damaged by Russian strikes, complicating the reception of additional capacity for the capital. Currently, Kyiv relies on two nuclear power plants — Rivne and Khmelnytskyi.

The situation with electricity supply in Kyiv, as experts conclude, may significantly worsen in the coming weeks. The city remains vulnerable due to the instability of the energy infrastructure, caused not only by frosts but also by the consequences of military actions. It is important to be prepared for possible power supply interruptions and take appropriate measures to conserve energy in households and enterprises. The next few weeks will be decisive for how Kyiv copes with this crisis.
