Debunking a Widespread Winter Myth

According to TSN.ua: Utility authorities in Kyiv have issued a warning against a popular piece of advice to pour salt into sewers to prevent pipes from freezing, stating the method is both ineffective and potentially damaging. The Kyiv City State Administration (KCMA) explained that internal sewer networks are designed not to freeze under normal operating conditions. Furthermore, external pipelines are buried below the frost line, which in Kyiv reaches a depth of approximately 1.2 meters.

The Risks of Using Salt

Officials highlighted several significant problems that can arise from using salt in this manner, including:

  • disruption of the wastewater treatment process;
  • an increase in sodium chloride levels in the sewage;
  • a deterioration in the performance of the drainage system.

With winter's chill setting in, ensuring the stability and efficiency of municipal systems is more critical than ever, especially given the recent strain on infrastructure.

Recall that on the night of February 12, Russia launched attacks on critical infrastructure facilities in Kyiv.

These attacks left 2,600 buildings in the Desnianskyi, Dniprovskyi, Pecherskyi, and Solomianskyi districts without heating. Over 1,100 apartment blocks in the Desnianskyi and Darnytskyi districts are also without heat due to critical damage to the Darnytsia Thermal Power Plant. Additionally, 107,000 households were left without electricity. This context underscores the vital importance of maintaining all utility networks in proper working order during harsh weather.

These events highlight the necessity for correct utility system operation, particularly in winter when the risks of frozen pipes and disruptions to heat and power supplies increase significantly. Proper sewer management practices and public education on maintenance can help prevent additional complications during severe weather. Understanding the potential consequences of using salt in sewers is crucial for ensuring infrastructure stability amid the challenges of war and winter cold.
