Former Ukrainian Special Operations Commander Sentenced to 15 Years for Treason.
Eduard Shevchenko's Verdict
According to TSN.ua: A former commander of the Ochakiv-based 73rd Naval Special Operations Center and advisor to the mayor of Ochakiv, Eduard Shevchenko, has been found guilty of high treason and sentenced to 15 years in prison. The ruling was delivered by the Zavodsky District Court in Mykolaiv. Shevchenko had spent three years in pretrial detention, and his case was built on evidence gathered by the Security Service of Ukraine.
Case Details
According to investigators, Shevchenko was recruited by Russian security forces starting in 2018. A key piece of evidence was a recorded conversation between Shevchenko and Sergei Kolesnikov in late December 2022. Shevchenko, a veteran of the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) and a captain 1st rank, served as commander of the 73rd Naval Special Operations Center from 2016 to 2017. From 2018 to 2019, he led the anti-submarine warfare group within the Ukrainian Navy Command. In recent years, he also held a position in the Ochakiv City Council.
During the trial, Shevchenko commented on the possibility of a prisoner exchange:
“Why would I agree to an exchange with people I don’t consider my own? Fight them for two years and then swap? Trade one prison for another?”A fellow soldier noted that in 2016, the Russian side had placed a $25,000 bounty on the commander’s head. This case has drawn significant attention from both the public and military analysts, as it highlights the risks Ukrainian service members face.
The sentence handed down to Eduard Shevchenko has sparked widespread discussion in Ukraine, underscoring the challenges military personnel encounter during wartime and the potential threats posed by the enemy. The recruitment pattern documented in this case may serve as a warning for other soldiers, emphasizing the need for vigilance and loyalty in conflict zones. It also raises important questions about Ukraine’s security protocols and oversight mechanisms for military personnel.
