Holocaust Memorial Ceremony Held in Lviv

According to Novyny.live: On January 27, the city of Lviv held a ceremony to honor the victims of the Holocaust. The event was attended by representatives of Jewish communities, city officials, and members of the public. This date serves as a solemn reminder of the horrific events during which thousands of Jews were murdered in the city. International Holocaust Remembrance Day marks the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp.

The main sites of commemoration were:

  • the monument to the victims of the Lviv Ghetto on Chornovola Avenue;
  • a memorial stone at the site of the Janowska concentration camp.

Participants lit candles and laid flowers in memory of the dead. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also honored the memory of Holocaust victims, stressing the importance of remembering those tragic times.

Kyrylo Budanov, who also took part in the commemoration, spoke of the Holocaust victims, noting the necessity of remembering their suffering. Attendees shared their memories and personal reflections.

Diana, a participant: 'I come here every year because I believe it is necessary. It is my duty to the Jewish people who lived here and were murdered. One-third of Lviv's population was Jewish at that time, and they were all destroyed.'

Another participant, Olha Lidovska, shared her personal experience: 'Speaking for myself personally, part of my family perished in the Holocaust. Their graves were not preserved. We do not know their names because during the Soviet era, this was not spoken about or mentioned.' These words underscore the vital importance of remembering Holocaust victims and the need for commemoration to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
