Sociologists recorded a sharp decline in the optimism of Ukrainians: what the survey showed

According to ТСН: In Ukraine, the number of optimists has decreased, but people still hope for the better: their expectations for 2026 are higher than those of residents of Western Europe. The sociological group 'Rating' conducted a survey among 1000 people to learn about their moods.

Overall mood: optimism has 'dropped'

A significant portion of Ukrainians (39%) still believes that 2026 will be better than the previous year, although this figure has significantly decreased. For comparison: in 2023, optimists accounted for 51%.

  • The share of those who believe that nothing will change has risen to 27%.

  • The number of pessimists has remained stable: one in four Ukrainians predicts a worsening situation.

Interestingly, the most optimistic residents are from rural areas and older people (51+), while the most skepticism is shown by young men aged 18–35.

Economy: preparing to tighten belts

In financial terms, society has no illusions. Ukraine has found itself in the top 5 countries with the highest level of economic pessimism (along with Belgium, France, Latvia, and Germany).

  • About two-thirds (63–64%) of respondents believe that 2026 will be a year of economic difficulties.

  • Only one in ten believes in prosperity.

Peace in the world: hope is rising

The most unexpected trend concerns security. While in Western Europe, 55% of people expect an unsettled year, Ukrainians demonstrate a growing hope for peace.

Opinions are divided into three equal parts: a third believes in peace, a third thinks the situation will remain unchanged, and another third expects escalation. However, the share of those who believe in peace has increased from 26% in 2023 to 33% today.

The survey also showed how Ukrainians perceive peace plans: only 14% of citizens categorically reject a joint peace plan between Europe and Ukraine, while the majority lean towards finding a viable compromise.

These results reflect a young Ukrainian nation that, despite challenging conditions, continues to hope for the better. It is worth noting that perceptions of the economic situation and prospects for peace may change depending on new challenges and achievements on the political scene. Society remains in anticipation of further events that may influence the overall mood and economic state of the country.
