Archaeological Finds at the Bottom of a Reservoir

According to TSN.ua: In Turkey's Diyarbakır Province, within the Eğil district, researchers have uncovered archaeological remains dating back roughly 2,400 years at the bottom of a reservoir. Divers conducted a detailed survey of the submerged structures, which were flooded during the construction of the reservoir that began in 1986. The filling of the reservoir was completed in 1997, and since then, numerous archaeological artifacts have been preserved on its floor. This discovery highlights how large-scale infrastructure projects can sometimes conceal—and protect—cultural treasures beneath the waters.

Objects Discovered

The items found at the bottom of the reservoir include:

• rock-cut tombs
• a mosque
• a madrasa (Islamic school)
• a hammam (public bathhouse)

These archaeological remnants point to the region's rich cultural heritage and deep history. In 1995, during preparations for the reservoir's construction, the tombs of the prophets Hazrat Zulkifl and Hazrat Elyasa were salvaged—both of which remain important historical features of the area.
