Ukraine's New Power Outage Schedules: Up to 16 Hours of Blackouts Daily

According to TSN.ua: On January 18, 2023, Serhii Kovalenko, CEO of Yasno, announced a new system for electricity blackout schedules across Ukraine. Most regions are now moving to a system of 4.5 to 5 scheduled outage blocks per day, which could result in power being off for over 16 hours within a 24-hour period. This situation is a direct consequence of Russia's sustained attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which have severely damaged the national grid.

In Kyiv, emergency blackouts are currently in effect, making outages unpredictable. According to approximate estimates, the capital region may have only about 3 hours of electricity followed by up to 10 hours without power. Serhii Kovalenko noted that the previously cited maximum intervals of 7 hours without power and 3.5 hours with power are no longer accurate. As of January 18, 2023, Kyiv is experiencing persistent local outages due to freezing temperatures and the strain on aging infrastructure.

Power Supply Issues in Kyiv

A separate and acute problem involves numerous outages within Kyiv's residential buildings. In response, repair crews are working to restore heating in 143 apartment blocks. Residents are advised to take the following steps in case of an emergency power loss:

  • Contact your housing office (ZhEK) or building management association (OSBB);
  • Have the electrical system inspected by a qualified electrician;
  • Submit a formal request to the local power network operator.

The shift to these new, more severe outage schedules highlights the critical state of Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which has been exacerbated by harsh winter conditions. Prolonged blackouts significantly disrupt daily life, especially during the cold season when the need for heating and electricity is greatest. This underscores the vital importance of rapid emergency response and the work of repair crews to restore essential utilities.
