Five Years Since Bucha, Irpin, and Hostomel Were Freed: The Liberation of Kyiv Region.
Fifth Anniversary of Kyiv Region’s Hero Cities Being Liberated
According to TSN.ua: On March 31, 2023, Ukraine marks five years since the liberation of the hero cities in the Kyiv region—Hostomel, Bucha, and Irpin—a pivotal moment in the fight against Russian aggression. These events have come to symbolize the resilience and courage of the Ukrainian people during the armed conflict.
The Battle for Hostomel and the Toll It Took
The battle for Hostomel erupted on February 24, 2022, when Russian helicopters launched an assault on the Antonov Airport. National Guard troops defending the site managed to shoot down six enemy helicopters. The occupation of Hostomel lasted from late February until the end of March 2022. During this period, the city’s mayor, Yuriy Prylypko, was killed, highlighting the dire situation for local residents. The fighting also destroyed the AN-225 Mriya aircraft in the airport’s hangars. Over the course of the occupation, more than 4,500 buildings in Hostomel were damaged, with 905 completely razed. On Luhova Street, 95% of structures were obliterated, underscoring the scale of devastation.
Bucha also suffered immense losses. In the Bucha district, over 9,000 war crimes have been documented, with more than 1,400 civilians killed, including 37 children. These figures reveal the brutality of the occupying forces and the tragedy endured by local communities.
The liberation of these hero cities marked a crucial step in restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity and advancing the struggle for independence. This anniversary serves as a reminder of the heroism displayed by Ukrainian defenders and the sacrifices made by civilians during the aggression. As it honors those who lost their lives, Ukraine continues to move forward, striving for peace and reconstruction.
The freeing of Hostomel, Bucha, and Irpin stands as a landmark event in modern Ukrainian history, emphasizing the nation’s resilience and its unwavering quest for freedom. These cities, though devastated by destruction and loss, remain focal points as symbols of the fight for independence. In commemorating the fallen, Ukraine not only celebrates its achievements but also underscores the ongoing need to pursue peace and rebuild the country.
