Rescue of Over 200 Animals from a Flooded Shelter in Kropyvnytskyi.
The Crisis at the BIM Shelter
According to TSN.ua: A severe flood in Kropyvnytskyi submerged the BIM animal shelter, placing dozens of dogs and cats in immediate danger. Volunteers and local residents worked non-stop for two days to save the animals, battling freezing temperatures that plunged to minus six degrees Celsius. This type of flash flooding is an increasing challenge for many Ukrainian cities, testing emergency response for both people and animals.
At the time of the flooding, nearly 200 dogs were housed in the shelter's outdoor enclosures. As of February 18, 26 dogs remained outside while 42 were sheltered inside the main building. Tragically, a cat named Anfisa and a dog named Zhulka lost their lives during the rescue operation.
"Without these people, there would have been dozens of deaths," said Svitlana Lukyanchuk.
Svitlana Lukyanchuk, one of the volunteers, added: "I still don't understand how everyone made it to the shelter today. Adrenaline must be a powerful thing." She took personal responsibility for the losses, stating, "I fully accept responsibility for the death of the cat."
The Power of Community Action
This emergency highlights how critical community cooperation is for saving animal lives during a disaster. Faced with the crisis, volunteers and concerned citizens showed remarkable dedication and a readiness to help those who could not help themselves.
Such widespread community involvement in rescue efforts points to a growing public awareness about the plight of stray animals and the need for their protection. This shift in consciousness can serve as a foundation for future initiatives aimed at improving animal welfare standards.
