Laser Defense for Washington: Inside the Pentagon’s Anti-Drone Plan.
Washington Set to Deploy Anti-Drone Laser System
According to TSN.ua: The U.S. Department of Defense plans to install an anti-drone laser system in Washington, D.C., aimed at shielding top government officials from potential aerial threats. This move comes amid heightened concerns over Iranian-linked dangers and suspicious drone activity near Fort McNair, a military base located just 3.2 kilometers from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in the southwest of the capital.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have confirmed that the new system is designed to bolster security for government buildings and personnel. Notably, in February 2023, a military laser mistakenly targeted a civilian weather balloon near El Paso. However, during testing of the LOCUST laser, no structural damage was inflicted on an aircraft, highlighting the technology’s potential capabilities.
Rising Aviation Threats Drive Urgency
Recent incidents have underscored the need for such measures. A midair collision between an Army helicopter and a regional passenger jet killed 67 people, and on March 22, two Air Canada pilots died while landing at LaGuardia Airport. These tragedies, along with growing risks to civil aviation and disputes with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) over flight safety in restricted zones, make the deployment of advanced defense technologies increasingly critical.
President Donald Trump has also backed the adoption of laser technologies, signaling their importance to national security. As pilots face new threats, experts note that
“what pilots really need to know is what specifically to watch for when flying in these areas and how to prepare.”
In essence, the deployment of an anti-drone laser system in Washington represents a key step in protecting both high-ranking officials and civilian aviation amid escalating dangers. This initiative reflects the U.S. government’s serious commitment to national security, particularly in light of recent aviation tragedies. Continuous monitoring and adaptation of safety measures will be essential to safeguard both VIPs and ordinary air travelers.
