Pre-Easter Spike in Food Costs

According to TSN.ua: In the lead-up to Easter, Ukraine has seen a sharp increase in the price of essential food items, particularly eggs and meat. This price hike is expected to affect consumer demand and strain household budgets as families prepare for holiday celebrations.

How Egg and Meat Prices Have Changed

What has happened to egg prices? The cost of chicken eggs has risen by 6.5% to 8%, depending on the grade. A dozen C1-grade eggs now costs 66 hryvnias, while C0-grade eggs range from 65 to 70 hryvnias. For CB-grade eggs, the price has gone up to between 72 and 77 hryvnias per dozen.

Chicken and lamb have also seen notable price adjustments. Chicken meat has become 14% to 29% more expensive. Specific examples include:

  • Chicken wings: up from 69 to 79 hryvnias per kilogram;
  • Chicken thighs: up from 97 to 125 hryvnias per kilogram;
  • Dietary chicken fillet: up from 139 to 169 hryvnias per kilogram.

Turkey prices have climbed between 5% and 17%; turkey fillet now costs 315 hryvnias per kilogram, while factory-stewed turkey is priced at 199 hryvnias. Lamb has also become more expensive: lamb neck now goes for 280 hryvnias per kilogram, and the average price for lamb ribs is 260 hryvnias per kilogram.

Rising costs for staple foods, especially before the holidays, may influence consumer choices and alter plans for festive meals.

Given these price increases for key food items, families may need to rethink their spending and opt for more affordable dishes for the holiday table. This could lead to shifts in consumer habits, as people look for ways to cut costs amid financial pressure. The pre-Easter price surge may also reflect broader economic trends that warrant close attention from both consumers and government authorities.
