Witnesses reported that the man tried to protect his wife, Larysa Kleitman, and was shot during the indiscriminate firing. The couple had been together for about 50 years and specifically traveled from the Matraville area to celebrate the holiday.
“I believe he was shot when he stood up to protect me, and the bullet hit him in the back of the head,” the woman said.

The couple immigrated to Australia from Ukraine. They have two children and 11 grandchildren.
According to official data, at least 12 people were killed in the attack, including children. Another 29 people were injured and hospitalized in various hospitals in Sydney, as reported by the New South Wales Ambulance Service.
