Investigation into Child Abuse in Poltava Region

According to TSN.ua: Law enforcement in Ukraine's Poltava region is investigating a case of severe child abuse. A 30-year-old woman is suspected of torturing her younger sisters, aged 13 and 16. The incident occurred in September 2025, when the girls were allegedly forced to kneel for two days without food or sleep. According to the investigation, the guardian also made them eat a mixture of buckwheat and salt and beat the sisters with a metal shoehorn.

Following this abuse, the girls fled their home and were later found by police in Poltava. The suspect has been formally notified of suspicion of torture under Part 1 of Article 127 of Ukraine's Criminal Code. This case has sparked significant public outcry, coinciding with broader national efforts to scrutinize family-based childcare arrangements. Such incidents highlight the critical need for vigilance in child welfare systems.

Nationwide Review of Child-Rearing Conditions

Currently, 45 interagency groups have been established in Ukraine to inspect the conditions of children in family settings. As part of these inspections, over 700 families and 281 childcare institutions have already been assessed, with monitoring extending to more than 26,000 children.

As Yevhen Hladiy noted, 'A guardian is obligated to provide a child with the necessary conditions for life, education, and development, and to protect their rights and interests.'

This situation underscores the vital importance of monitoring the upbringing conditions of children within families.

The case points to serious systemic issues in child protection in Ukraine. The response from both society and law enforcement to such brutal incidents is crucial for preventing similar events in the future. Conducting checks on family child-rearing conditions could be a step toward improving the situation and ensuring the safety of children in domestic environments.
