Russian Strike on Kyiv Power Plant Amid Sub-Zero Temperatures Causes Injuries.
Kyiv Power Plant Targeted in Attack
According to TSN.ua: On February 3, 2023, a Russian attack on Kyiv caused significant damage to a capital city thermal power plant (TPP). The strikes also damaged residential buildings, with local residents among the casualties. According to available information, six people were wounded in this assault.
At the time of the shelling, the air temperature in the capital had dropped to -25°C (-13°F), worsening the situation for the injured and those left without heating. A gas station in Kyiv's Pechersk district was also damaged, further highlighting the severe consequences of the hostile actions. This attack on critical infrastructure during a deep freeze is a tactic that has been used repeatedly since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
Official Statements
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal commented on the situation, stating that the 'strike was deliberate.'
He emphasized the importance of strengthening the protection of energy facilities, pointing out that 'Russia continues to wage a hybrid war against Ukraine and NATO members.' These events underscore the ongoing tension in the region and the persistent threats to civilian infrastructure and safety.
The attack on the Kyiv TPP is part of the protracted conflict between Ukraine and Russia, which has now lasted for several years. Striking energy infrastructure during harsh winter conditions creates additional hardships for Ukrainian citizens already suffering from the war's consequences. Reinforcing the defense of critical facilities remains a priority for the Ukrainian government in the face of continued aggression.
