Ukraine Given Two-Month Ultimatum by Russia to Withdraw from Donetsk Region.
Moscow Intensifies Pressure on Kyiv
According to TSN.ua: On March 31, 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed that Russia has issued a demand for Ukraine to pull its forces out of the Donetsk region within two months—by the end of May 2026. This ultimatum specifically targets the remaining Ukrainian-held areas of Donetsk, including the heavily fortified Ukrainian Fortress Belt. Zelenskyy detailed this latest act of coercion, highlighting Moscow's insistence on a full withdrawal.
The Kremlin previously attempted to seize this strategic area in 2014 and again in 2022, but failed both times. Since early 2026, the pace of Russian military advances has noticeably slowed. Zelenskyy also expressed concern that Russia has shown no willingness to agree to a mutual halt in strikes against energy infrastructure, a stance that deepens Ukraine’s unease.
Illegitimate Election Plans and Sovereignty Concerns
Ella Pamfilova, head of Russia’s Central Election Commission, announced intentions to facilitate voting rights for Ukrainians living in Russia if elections are held in Ukraine. This has raised alarms about potential electoral manipulation, which could mark a new phase in efforts to undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov argued that Ukraine needs any ceasefire it can get, claiming that battlefield dynamics are not in Kyiv’s favor and that Russian troops are advancing along the entire front line.
These developments signal an escalation in the conflict and sustained pressure from Moscow on Ukraine, drawing concern from the international community. Russia’s withdrawal demands and its plans to involve Ukrainians in Russia in voting processes suggest the Kremlin may be seeking to destabilize Ukraine further—a situation that requires close monitoring by international organizations and nations that support Ukrainian sovereignty.
