Rational Thinking in Chimpanzees

According to ТСН: Studies show that rational thinking, previously considered an exclusively human characteristic, may also be inherent in chimpanzees. The experiment was conducted at a chimpanzee sanctuary on Ngamba Island in Uganda. The primates were offered a choice between two boxes: one contained food, while the other was empty. Initially, the chimpanzees received a primary cue, followed by successive cues of varying strength indicating the location of the food.

Hannah Schleihauf, an assistant professor of developmental psychology at Utrecht University, commented on the study's findings:

“When the initial evidence was convincing, the chimpanzees stuck with their original choice. When new evidence clearly outweighed the first, they changed their choice.”

Scientists, using computer models, confirmed that the chimpanzees' reactions were based on rational strategies of belief revision and not solely on new information. The most significant discovery was the conscious perception of facts by the primates.

Schleihauf noted:

“They not only adjusted their choices but also did so in ways that indicate they were aware of the evidential basis for their beliefs.”

This discovery suggests that belief revision based on weighing evidence is a key feature of rationality, which was previously thought to be unique to humans, also applies to chimpanzees.

Thus, the results of this study change our understanding of primate cognitive abilities. It turns out that chimpanzees are capable of complex reasoning, indicating their evolutionary proximity to humans. This discovery may open new horizons in the study of animal psychology and behavior.
