Kyiv may remain without electricity for 20 hours a day: expert explains the reasons.
According to ТСН: Kyiv residents are alarmed by new forecasts regarding the energy deficit. There is a likelihood that the city may remain without electricity for 20-22 hours a day if the temperature drops to minus 10 degrees.
Possible worsening of the electricity supply situation
Energy security expert Mykhailo Gonchar notes that new combined and massive attacks by Russia may cause further difficulties with electricity supply in Kyiv, as has already happened in Odesa.
“If there are new massive attacks by the Russians, then, of course, the situation will not be the best for us. However, predicting how long there will be no electricity — whether it will be 12 or 22 hours — is simply impossible. Any scenario is difficult to rule out right now, but if there is constant information inflating the narrative with forecasts like 'everything is lost', then this is an exaggeration,” notes TSn.ua Mykhailo Gonchar.
Gonchar believes that assumptions about prolonged power outages in Kyiv are speculative and lack a basis in the real functioning of Ukraine's energy system.
“Unfortunately, some experts are ready to talk about 24-hour power outages, because there are no more hours in a day. Those who voice such scenarios are unlikely to understand how exactly the united energy system of Ukraine is currently operating,” he emphasizes.
Reasons for prolonged electricity outages in Kyiv
The expert explains that prolonged electricity outages lasting 14-16 hours are related to the energy deficit of the capital.
“Kyiv, as the largest energy-consuming center of Ukraine, has always had an energy deficit. Previously, this issue was partially resolved with funds from the EBRD when a high-voltage line was built to supply electricity from western nuclear power plants,” notes Gonchar.
He also emphasizes that the enemy exploits vulnerable points in Kyiv's energy system for attacks.
“The enemy's efforts in this regard have been directed since 2022, and no one has been idle. Everything was being restored, but it takes time,” he adds.
Need for truthful information from the authorities
Mykhailo Gonchar believes that the authorities must clearly inform the population about difficulties with electricity supply to avoid panic and misinformation.
“I think that the Ministry of Energy should inform people more effectively, not necessarily in detail, but clearly about the actual state of electricity supply,” emphasizes the expert.
He also stresses the importance of telling the society the truth about the situation, rather than providing deliberately optimistic forecasts that do not reflect reality.
Unfortunately, Gonchar believes that pre-election populism has already begun to affect the communication of the authorities with the population.
“Because later everything will be blamed on market operators, but all statements should be approached with great caution,” he summarizes.
The situation with electricity supply in Kyiv remains extremely complicated, and forecasts regarding possible outages raise concerns among residents. The authorities must find effective ways to communicate with the population to ensure stability and confidence during difficult times, as this depends on the mood and readiness of people for potential difficulties. It is essential that the information is not only current but also truthful, as this will help prevent panic and misinformation in society.
