Kyiv Grinds to a Halt Under 15 cm of Snow

According to TSN.ua: A major snowstorm on February 5th dumped nearly 15 cm of snow on Kyiv, severely disrupting the city's transportation network. While municipal crews are working to clear the roads, conditions remain difficult. Nighttime temperatures dropped to -10°C, with daytime highs not exceeding -6°C, complicating snow removal efforts. Such winter storms, while not uncommon, can quickly overwhelm urban infrastructure designed for milder conditions.

Major Roadways Severely Impacted

Significant traffic jams have formed on key highways into and around the capital:

  • Traffic on the Zhytomyr Highway is nearly at a standstill.
  • A major backup on the Warsaw Highway stretches from Bucha to Moschun and the main entrance to Kyiv.
  • The Odesa Highway is also blocked on the approaches to the city.

Kyivavtodor has deployed 258 pieces of specialized equipment and over 400 workers for manual clearing. Despite these efforts, public transport in the capital is facing serious delays, exacerbated not only by the weather but also by the gridlocked roads. The continuing snowfall is disrupting daily life for Kyiv's residents, creating significant challenges for drivers and pedestrians alike.

This snowfall is one of the most severe in recent memory, highlighting the vulnerability of urban infrastructure to extreme weather events.

Transportation issues are expected to persist for several days, as weather forecasts do not predict a significant improvement. It is crucial for municipal services to continue their intensive road-clearing operations and to ensure safety for all road users.
