According to ТСН: The Kyiv Metro serves two important functions: it is not only a fast means of transport but also a reliable shelter. When an air alert is declared in the capital, thousands of people descend to the stations in search of safety during shelling. Metro employees ensure the smooth operation of the infrastructure, helping people quickly orient themselves, comfortably settle on the platforms, and providing support in difficult moments.

The municipal enterprise 'Kyiv Metro' emphasizes that everyone in the shelter should take care of themselves and their loved ones, providing recommendations for comfortable staying during the alert.

What to Take with You at Night in the Metro

For a comfortable night stay in the shelter, it is essential to have warm clothing, blankets, and mats, as the temperature in the underground facilities is around 17-18 degrees Celsius, and drafts may occur through the tunnels.

It is also advised to take along personal medications, a bottle of water, or a thermos with a warm drink.

Among hygiene products, it is advisable to have wet and dry wipes, as well as toilet paper.

Pet owners should take care of pads and special bags.

Rules for Using the Station as a Shelter Until Service Resumes

If the station is being used as a shelter until train services resume (22:30–23:30), do not settle in passenger movement areas to avoid complicating passage for those using the metro. It is important to use space rationally, not occupying unnecessary areas, as the shelter is communal.

Keep an eye on personal belongings and maintain cleanliness, so that after the air alert is lifted, there are no lost items or garbage left behind.

Rules After Service Resumes

After five thirty in the morning, when the metro resumes operation, stations no longer function as shelters. Passengers remaining inside must understand that the subway is returning to its regular operational mode.

During this time, sleeping on platforms, stairs, and in passenger movement areas is strictly prohibited, as it poses safety risks due to train movements and passenger flow and complicates evacuation.

Operation of the Metro at Night

To ensure the uninterrupted operation of the capital's metro during the day, more than 700 employees with various tasks work at night. They are engaged in restoring paint coatings, replacing rails and sleepers, cleaning, checking electrical equipment, and security systems.

At night, specialized service transport operates, including motor trolleys that carry workers, necessary materials, and tools to work sites. The metro urges understanding towards the workers, as they ensure the uninterrupted operation of the stations in shelter mode and perform current tasks to keep the metro safe and convenient for daytime use.

The established rules not only ensure safety during alerts but also maintain order at the stations acting as shelters. In conditions of stress and uncertainty, it is essential to follow the recommendations from the metro to keep collective spaces comfortable for everyone.
