Reverse draft in the stove: how to eliminate smoke in the house in 5 steps.
According to ТСН: Many people who heat their rooms with stoves face the problem of smoke clouds appearing in the room instead of the expected comfort. This phenomenon, known as reverse draft, has its causes that can be eliminated. By considering these factors in advance, you can heat your space without smoke and unpleasant odors.
Chimney and soot blockages
One of the common causes is a clogged pipe. Soot settles on the walls of the chimney, narrowing the passage, which reduces the draft and leads to smoke entering the room.
The solution to this problem is regular cleaning of the chimney, which should be done in case of blockage. Note that frequent use of low-quality wood or waste accelerates the pollution process.
Smoking can also be caused by external factors or seasonal changes.
'Air jam' and cold season
In the cold season, for example, in autumn or winter, the chimney may cool down, which leads to the formation of a cold air jam. This jam creates barriers through which smoke returns to the room.
To solve this problem, it is necessary to warm the channel before lighting: open the direct passage (or, if there is none, the cleaning door), light paper or newspaper, and warm the channel, and only then light the stove.
Proper lighting technique
If the stove smokes while it is not warm, it may be due to improper lighting. Many people make mistakes, starting from using wet wood and ending with attempts to ignite the fire with a closed damper.
To avoid smoking and overcome the air jam, the stove needs to be warmed up properly. It is recommended to use the following methods:
Open the damper, light the newspaper at the entrance to the chimney, and then close the door, creating additional draft in a simple way - open and close the front door widely several times.
Warming the channel from above. Remove the circles near the stove, light paper as close to the chimney as possible, and gently blow on it. This will help the air rise, and only after that can you lay down the wood.
For ideal lighting, it is worth following this plan:
Ensure that the chimney is open (and checked for debris).
Place shavings, paper, or special fire-starting cubes at the bottom of the stove.
On top of this, place small dry wood, arranging them in a pyramid.
Light the bottom layer (where the shavings and paper are).
When the fire is well lit, you can add larger logs on top.
Real problems often arise due to the design features of the stove and the condition of the chimney channel.
Pipe height matters
If the draft remains weak, even with a clean chimney, you should check the height of the pipe. According to regulations, the smoke pipe should rise at least half a meter above the roof pitch, and the overall height from the grate to the cap should be about 5 meters. The taller the channel, the easier and more stable hot air rises.
If the construction is not high enough, the chimney should be extended. It is also recommended to install a canopy to prevent debris from entering the pipe.
Gaps in masonry and leaks
Cold air currents penetrating through leaks in the brickwork significantly complicate the normal rise of smoke. Cracks and joints should be sealed with a special mixture or a blend of clay and straw. After sealing, the draft usually improves.
Features of metal pipes
Thin metal pipes cool quickly, leading to the formation of condensation and deterioration of draft.
To avoid this, such pipes need to be insulated with basalt wool, fiberglass, or foamed polyethylene with foil. Insulation helps stabilize temperature and maintain a consistent draft.
Errors in the furnace design
Smoking may result from errors in the geometry of the stove:
If the doors are located above the first chimney channel, hot air may escape through them directly. In this case, a small partition can be installed to direct the gases into the desired passage.
Furnaces whose width exceeds forty centimeters sometimes smoke in strong winds. To stabilize the draft, the furnace can be narrowed by adding an additional row of bricks.
Why does it smoke when opening the doors
If the stove smokes when opening the doors, the reason may not only be in the design but also in the sharp opening. This disrupts the air balance inside the stove, leading to smoke being ejected outside.
By adhering to the proper conditions for chimney cleaning and proper lighting of the stoves, users can significantly reduce the risk of smoke in their rooms. It is important to care for regular maintenance and respond timely to problems to ensure safe and comfortable heating. In particular, during the winter period, monitoring the condition of chimney systems and their efficiency is especially critical.Read also
