Why Dogs Howl at Sirens: Experts Explain the Wolf Instinct.
According to ТСН: Dogs often react to the sounds of sirens — from air raid alarms to police or ambulance signals — with a kind of howling, adding their 'vocal comments' to these sounds.
Animal behavior expert Mary R. Birch shared her thoughts on the reasons behind this dog reaction:
'There are several explanations for why animals howl at sirens. While we can't know exactly what goes through a dog's mind, the siren seems to serve as an auditory stimulus that provokes howling. Some sirens even sound similar to howling.'
Why Dogs Howl at Sirens
Dr. Birch highlights several main reasons for such behavior, among which the heritage from wolves can be distinguished.
Dogs descend from wolves, so this instinctive way of 'howling' as a form of communication may be innate for some breeds. Loud sounds, such as sirens, can activate this natural reflex.
'There are several theories about why dogs howl. Some believe this skill is ingrained from the times of their wolf ancestors. Howling could serve as a group defense function, signaling danger or aiding communication,' Birch explains.
The expert also noted that her experience with huskies and observations of wolf packs suggest that adult dogs do not howl out of fear, but use it as a signal for other pack members.
She emphasized the communicative aspect of this phenomenon. Dogs may 'respond' to a siren, perceiving it as the sound of another animal, thus maintaining a sort of dialogue.
In the wild, wolves use howling to mark their location to other pack members. Similarly, domestic dogs may react with howling to sounds or people, as if holding a conversation.
This explains why some dogs are particularly sensitive to sirens: for them, this sound may be a signal from another animal, which they instinctively respond to.
It is also worth noting that golden retrievers have genes similar to humans, which caused a sensation among researchers.
Furthermore, there are no prohibitions in current Ukrainian legislation regarding the presence of pets in public places. However, in some stores, the attitude towards customers with dogs may be ambiguous.
Thus, dogs howling at sirens is not only a manifestation of instincts but also reflects their ability to communicate. Owners of four-legged friends may notice this behavior in their pets, indicating their sensitivity to the surrounding world, and possibly even helping to better understand their emotional reactions to various sounds.
