Sudden Flood in Morocco: Dozens Dead After Seven Years of Drought.
According to ТСН: Morocco, which has been experiencing a water crisis for seven years, became a victim of a natural disaster: a sudden flood on December 14 in the city of Safi led to the deaths of more than thirty people and left the city in ruins.
Consequences of the Flood
In just one hour, heavy rain brought so much precipitation that it flooded at least 70 residential and commercial buildings in the historic part of the city. Raging waters swept away cars and trash containers, causing severe damage to the roadway.
At least 37 people have been confirmed dead, and another 32 were injured. The injured were taken to hospitals, but most have already been discharged after treatment.
The Situation at the Moment
By Sunday evening, the water level had noticeably decreased. Nevertheless, rescue services continue search operations, trying to find other potential victims or casualties of the flood.
Heavy rains and snowfalls that have engulfed Morocco are a consequence of a seven-year drought that resulted in the drying of parts of the country's largest reservoirs. According to the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM), the year 2024 has already become the hottest in Morocco's history, with an average rainfall deficit of 24.7%.
The meteorological service also warns of new heavy rainfall expected on Tuesday.
This situation in Morocco shows just how vulnerable the region is in the context of climate change. After prolonged drought, sudden downpours have been a real blow to the population and infrastructure. The country's authorities and rescue services continue to work on overcoming the consequences of this natural disaster, hoping to save lives and improve the situation in the country.
