Zelenskyy Rejects Trump’s Claim That Ukraine and Russia Are Close to Peace.
Trump’s Statement on a Potential Peace Agreement
According to TSN.ua: U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin are on the verge of signing a peace deal. Expressing optimism, Trump said he hopes
“President Putin and President Zelenskyy will sit down at the negotiating table and reach an agreement. I think they are close to it, but I’ve been saying that for a long time.”This remark comes amid ongoing international efforts to de-escalate the war that began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Conflicting Statements
Zelenskyy, however, directly contradicted Trump’s assessment. He pointed to Russia’s recent large-scale attacks on Ukraine as clear evidence that Moscow has no intention of ending the conflict. The Ukrainian leader emphasized that
“such attacks show there is no desire to end the war.”
Trump also acknowledged that deep personal animosity between Zelenskyy and Putin complicates diplomatic progress, stating: “This should have been the easiest deal. But these two people really hate each other. You understand, hatred doesn’t help get deals done.”
The path to a peace settlement between Ukraine and Russia remains fraught with difficulty, given the stark contrast between Trump’s hopeful rhetoric and the grim realities on the ground. Despite the American president’s upbeat claims, ongoing military hostilities suggest that substantive negotiations are still a distant prospect.
Monitoring future developments is crucial, as they could have significant implications for regional stability and international relations.
