Three Infants Killed in Jerusalem Mass Poisoning at Unlicensed Nursery.
Jerusalem Nursery Tragedy
According to TSN.ua: A mass poisoning at an unlicensed nursery in Jerusalem's Romema neighborhood on January 19, 2023, has resulted in the deaths of three infants. The incident affected a total of 53 children, all just a few months old, with 13 of the survivors currently receiving intensive care. This event has sparked a national conversation about childcare regulation in Israel.
The facility was operating without a license or any form of state supervision. At the time of the incident, 55 infants were present, reportedly sleeping on mattresses placed in hallways, toilets, and closets, raising serious concerns about their living conditions. Investigators believe the most likely cause of the tragedy is poisoning from carbon monoxide or toxic fumes.
Israeli Education Ministry's Response
Israel's Ministry of Education confirmed the nursery was operating illegally. Authorities are now investigating the technical causes of the poisoning as well as the numerous health and safety violations. Yoav Kish, a ministry spokesperson, stated:
“Defenseless infants paid with their lives for the operation of an institution that functioned contrary to the law, without permits and without oversight.” - Yoav Kish
This horrific event has caused widespread public outrage and drawn intense scrutiny to the issue of oversight for childcare facilities. The tragedy underscores critical failures in Israel's system for monitoring such institutions, where the absence of licensing and supervision can lead to catastrophic outcomes. Both the public and government bodies now face urgent calls to review and strengthen safety measures to protect children in all care settings.
