Kyiv’s Strategic Errors in Engaging Beijing

According to TSN.ua: According to analyst Michal Bogusz, Ukraine has made critical strategic errors in its dealings with China, chief among them overplaying its own significance and failing to grasp how Chinese foreign policy truly operates. In a recent interview, Bogusz stressed that Beijing has never viewed Ukraine as an equal partner. Before the full-scale war, China’s interest in Ukraine was limited to resource extraction—specifically food supplies and military technologies.

Ukraine’s geopolitical standing in Chinese eyes remains severely restricted. The country clearly overestimated its role and weight within China’s strategic calculus, Bogusz argues. When Kyiv attempted to open a dialogue with Global South nations, Beijing perceived this as a threat—a clear sign that Ukrainian officials do not fully understand Chinese priorities. This misunderstanding has made it much harder to build constructive bilateral ties.

The State of Relations in 2026

By 2026, the relationship remains minimal. Direct communication between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Xi Jinping has occurred only once, in April 2023, with no meaningful follow-up since. Notably, China’s abstention during a December 2025 vote in the UN General Assembly weakened the resulting resolution, signaling Beijing’s continued backing of Russia in the armed conflict.

Ukraine’s current approach clearly needs a fundamental reassessment and adjustment, as its existing strategy does not align with the realities of Chinese policy. Amid global political instability and intensifying great-power rivalry, Kyiv must rethink its foreign policy priorities and its strategy for engaging China. A realistic understanding of China’s interests—combined with an honest appraisal of Ukraine’s own geopolitical standing—could be key to improving relations. Restarting dialogue and identifying mutual benefits may help foster regional stability and strengthen Ukraine’s international position.
