Lawyer in the murder case on the funicular punished for intentional delays in court.
According to ТСН: The lawyer who defended the accused in the high-profile case of the murder of teenager Maksym Maturukhin at the Kyiv funicular station has been held accountable for intentionally delaying the court proceedings.
This case concerns the murder of 16-year-old Maksym at the capital's funicular, where a verdict was delivered in September 2025. Numerous instances of delays in the process were recorded during the hearing, attributed to the defense lawyers of the accused Artem Kosov. In particular, court sessions were disrupted without valid reasons, and there were obstacles to the examination of evidence and questioning of witnesses.
“During the court proceedings, instances of intentional delays in the process by the defense lawyers of the accused Artem Kosov were repeatedly recorded. Specifically, court sessions were disrupted without valid reasons, and obstacles were created for the examination of evidence and questioning of witnesses,” the message states.
Judges of the Shevchenkivskyi District Court repeatedly raised the issue of the disciplinary responsibility of the accused's lawyers, but court rulings went unaddressed. The Attorney General of Ukraine Ruslan Kravchenko personally supervised the case, pointing out the unacceptable behavior of the lawyers who, according to the prosecution, artificially complicated the process and violated the rights of other participants in the proceedings.
In September 2025, the Office of the General Prosecutor submitted a complaint to the Qualification and Disciplinary Commission of the Bar regarding one of the lawyers in this case. On December 29, 2025, the disciplinary chamber of the Rivne region Bar Association satisfied this complaint, imposing a disciplinary penalty on the lawyer in the form of a suspension of their right to practice law for three months.
What is known about the murder of Maksym Maturukhin
It is noteworthy that in the spring of 2024 in Kyiv, a man broke the glass in the funicular carriage and slit Maksym Maturukhin's throat, causing his death. Friends of the deceased noted that the incident occurred after a conflict with a man in military uniform, which arose over the question of whether the guys were ready to defend the Motherland.
Initially, the suspect in the murder, a serviceman of the Security Service, did not admit his guilt. In the winter of 2024, his lawyers requested a softer preventive measure from detention to house arrest. In the summer of 2025, still a suspect, he first addressed the mother of the deceased, expressing regret for the situation. On September 17, during the court, he admitted his guilt and expressed remorse for his actions.
Disciplinary actions against the lawyer indicate the importance of maintaining a fair process in court. The case of Maksym Maturukhin has become a symbol of the fight against impunity and abuses in justice, and the continuation of the trial may have significant implications for the victims and their families.
