The Story of Yurii Mykytenchuk

According to TSN.ua: After his own heart stopped, Yurii Mykytenchuk—a veteran who endured captivity and severe torture in Russian prisons—received a donor heart. He spent 33 days on an ECMO machine while waiting for a transplant, ultimately gaining a second chance at life.

Yurii was taken prisoner in Donetsk region in September 2023. During his time in captivity, he now realizes he suffered a heart attack without even knowing it.

'They told me here that I had a heart attack while in captivity, but I had no idea,' Yurii explained.
His condition deteriorated, and on February 4, his heart stopped. After that, he was connected to an ECMO device, where he remained for 33 days awaiting a transplant.

The donor was a 43-year-old man who died from a stroke. Thanks to this transplant, Yurii was able to celebrate his 45th birthday free from medical machines.

'It was a terrible depression. I hate being stuck in one place, and here I was practically tied to the bed,' the veteran shared about his ordeal.

A New Life and Plans Ahead

Now, with his new heart, Yurii feels compelled to move forward with fresh goals. 'I survived war, captivity, a cardiac arrest, and 33 days on ECMO. I have no right to apathy now. That means I still have something to accomplish in this world,' he emphasized. Yurii Mykytenchuk’s story stands as a testament to an unbreakable spirit and hope for the future.

This account highlights not only the challenges faced by veterans but also the critical role of medical technology and organ donation. The heart transplant gave Yurii not just extended life but also renewed purpose in his struggle. It further underscores the humanity and support that can prove lifesaving during the most difficult times.
