Ceasefire Talks Stalled: Political Will Remains the Final Hurdle After 90% Military Agreement

Ukraine, US, and Russia Engage in Negotiations

According to TSN.ua: During trilateral talks involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia, a military working group successfully reached consensus on 90% of the necessary issues. However, achieving a full ceasefire still hinges on political will. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that the Geneva negotiations failed to produce agreement on the most difficult and contentious points.

Key Points of Contention

The primary topics that caused the most significant disagreements were:

  • The status of the temporarily occupied territories in eastern Ukraine
  • The future of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

President Zelenskyy emphasized that while military officials understand the mechanisms for controlling a ceasefire and ending the war, this is only possible if there is political will to do so.

“The military understands how to control a ceasefire and the end of the war, if there is political will,” stated Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Furthermore, Ukrainian representative Sergiy Kyslytsya highlighted the critical importance of establishing a monitoring system to ensure compliance with any ceasefire terms.

“The value lies in the fact that we are proceeding from the position that even now there are acceptable main elements of an architecture for a system to monitor violations, combat actions, or a ceasefire,” stressed Sergiy Kyslytsya.

Thus, despite substantial progress on the military negotiation front, a final resolution to the conflict depends on political decisions and compromises. These talks underscore the immense complexity of the situation, where political questions remain the primary barrier to a stable peace, even as military coordination advances. The ongoing war in Ukraine presents a profound challenge to European and global security, making diplomatic progress critical.
