Driver Sentenced to 12 Years for Double Homicide in Lviv Region.
Verdict Reached in Double Murder Case
According to TSN.ua: The Yavoriv District Court has sentenced a 57-year-old driver from a local enterprise to 12 years and 6 months in prison for a double homicide. The crime occurred on March 29, 2024, in the Lviv region, where the man killed his common-law wife and a 69-year-old male acquaintance. This case highlights the severe legal consequences for domestic violence in Ukraine.
Circumstances of the Crime
The murders took place in a private home. The 41-year-old female victim was 12-13 weeks pregnant at the time. The court cited aggravating factors, including the fact the crime was committed while the perpetrator was intoxicated and that one victim was an elderly person.
The defendant pleaded guilty, stating in court:
"In a fit of rage, I approached the woman in the kitchen and shouted, 'Go lie down in bed.' In the bed, I hit her. I was drunk and very angry because she was cheating."
Mitigating circumstances were also considered, such as the defendant's sincere remorse, lack of prior criminal record, and his health condition, having previously suffered a heart attack.
Additionally, the court ordered the defendant to pay 100,000 hryvnias in moral damages. This case has sparked significant public discussion, underscoring the persistent issues of domestic violence and the tragic consequences of alcohol abuse. The verdict serves as a stark reminder of the need for stronger preventative measures and support systems for victims of domestic abuse.
