Ban on winter fishing in Ukraine: where and how to fish from November 1.
According to inkorr.com: From November 1, a seasonal ban on fish catch in wintering holes has started in Ukraine. This restriction remains in effect until the beginning of the spawning season in 2026, aimed at preserving fish stocks and combating poaching. Violations of these rules are subject to fines and criminal liability.
This was reported by the State Agency for Development of Melioration, Fisheries and Food Programs.
Duration and purpose of the ban
The agency emphasizes that during the winter period, fish are particularly vulnerable. Therefore, control at water bodies will be intensified.
The head of the agency, Igor Klimenko, noted that protecting wintering holes is crucial for preserving resources and successful spawning in spring. He urged fishermen to strictly follow the rules.
Territorial offices have already published lists of wintering holes where fishing is prohibited. They can be reviewed through the official orders of the State Fisheries Agency.
How to fish legally in winter
Fishing is allowed outside of wintering holes, but only using certain types of gear. Allowed options include:
from the ice — winter rods and any types of tip-ups
without ice — bottom, float, fly fishing and spinning gear
The maximum number of hooks is up to seven per angler. Only artificial or natural baits are allowed. It is prohibited to use hooks larger than 10 mm (from the shank to the tip) during the ice cover, and also all single, double, and treble hooks without baits throughout the year.
Responsibility and fines
Failure to comply with the rules may result in fines, compensation for damages, and even criminal liability. A nationwide hotline is available for reporting violators: 0 800 50 52 50.
Earlier, it was reported that in four regions, certain species of fish are prohibited from being caught until March 1, 2026. The fine for violations can exceed 7 thousand hryvnias.
In addition, in the Odessa region, law enforcement detained a local resident for illegal fishing with nets. The man
caught fish worth over 215 thousand UAH. He was detained while fishing under the spawning ban.
The ban on fish catch in wintering holes aims to preserve the ecosystem of water bodies and help restore fish stocks. It is essential for fishermen to adhere to the rules, as irresponsible attitudes towards nature can lead to their significant reduction, which will affect fishing in the future.
