My or Mine birthday: how to speak correctly in Ukrainian.
According to ТСН: Every year we use the phrases 'my birthday' or 'mine birthday', but we do not always know how to formulate them correctly. The incorrect version 'mine birthday' can often be heard, however, according to Ukrainian language rules, this variant is grammatically incorrect.
Correct usage: 'my' or 'mine birthday'
To understand which word to use, one should pay attention to the key word in this phrase. In the phrase 'birthday', the important noun is 'day'.
This noun is masculine (he), not neuter (it). Since the pronoun 'mine' agrees with neuter nouns, and 'day' is not among them, the correct form is 'my birthday'. The word 'birthday' in this expression only clarifies which specific day is meant.
Therefore, it is correct to say 'today is my birthday'.
The main word 'day' in the phrase 'birthday' (or in similar ones, such as 'Knowledge Day', 'Mother's Day') determines the agreement of all other words in the masculine gender.
This rule applies to:
Agreement by gender. With this phrase, we choose adjectives or pronouns in the masculine gender, for example: 'Knowledge Day', 'Mother's Day'.
Agreement of the verb. It is more correct to say: 'the birthday was', not 'it was'.
Correct declension. One should say 'we were at the birthday', not 'at the birthday party'.
Greetings. It is correct to say 'congratulations on the birthday', not 'on the birthday'.
Grammatical nuances
Usually both words in the phrase 'birthday' are written in lowercase. However, if you want to express special respect to the birthday person, you can write the word 'Day' with a capital letter.
If you decide to use the neuter pronoun 'mine', you can say 'today is my holiday', since the word 'holiday' is a neuter noun.
Thus, by adhering to the correct grammatical rules, you can avoid misunderstandings during greetings. The correct usage of forms will help you communicate better and show your respect for others. Knowledge of such nuances makes our language more vivid and understandable.
