Death from leptospirosis in Lviv region: how to avoid a dangerous infection

According to ТСН: In the Lviv region, a case has been recorded of the death of a 66-year-old woman from leptospirosis — a dangerous bacterial infection, the symptoms of which can resemble the flu or Covid-19. The woman sought medical help too late, likely becoming infected through water from a well or while working in the yard where there were rodents.

It is known that the woman fell ill on November 11. Only on the fifth day after the onset of the first symptoms did she receive medical assistance. The patient was hospitalized to the intensive care unit of the Lviv Regional Infectious Diseases Hospital in serious condition, but unfortunately, she could not be saved.

Symptoms of Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is a dangerous bacterial infection caused by Leptospira. Its symptoms often include:

  • high temperature, chills, headache;

  • sharp pain in the calf muscles (key symptom);

  • nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;

  • jaundice and redness of the eyes.

How rodents spread the infection

Experts point out that the risk of contracting leptospirosis increases during recreation or work in nature, fishing, or when in contact with water, soil, and products that may have been contaminated with the urine of infected animals.

It is known that the woman worked in her yard, cared for her farm, drank water from her well, and consumed home-grown fruits. Infection can also occur during swimming or fishing in contaminated waters, harvesting hay in wet areas, or caring for sick animals.

Doctors emphasize the importance of simple preventive rules, as leptospirosis can be fatal:

  1. Avoid water bodies where infected animals may be present, do not fish or swim near watering places;

  2. Use protective clothing and gloves when working with wet soil;

  3. Regularly wash hands, thoroughly rinse vegetables and fruits;

  4. Protect products and water from rodents;

  5. Conduct rodent control (destruction of rodents);

  6. Vaccinate domestic and farm animals.

Since the beginning of the year, four cases of leptospirosis have been registered in the Rivne region, indicating the relevance of this bacterial threat in Ukraine.

Also, the spread of the Coxsackie virus causes concern in Ukraine — an extremely contagious infection from the enterovirus group. In the Kyiv region, an outbreak of Coxsackie disease among children has been recorded — to date, the disease has been confirmed in 13 cases.

The situation with leptospirosis and the outbreak of the Coxsackie virus in Ukraine requires close attention from the public and medical professionals. It is important to adhere to preventive measures to avoid further spread of dangerous infections.
