December 13: Day of Remembrance of the Holy Martyrs and Folk Omens for Winter.
According to ТСН: Today in the Orthodox calendar, we commemorate the Day of Remembrance of the Holy Martyrs Eustratius, Eugenes, Axentius, Mardarius, and Orestes. These martyrs lived during the reign of the Roman Emperor Diocletian (284–305), when Christians were persecuted in Armenia and other Roman provinces.
During that difficult period, Christians often secretly professed their faith. However, inspired by the example of brave confessors, many openly acknowledged their faith and endured persecution.
Eustratius, a high-ranking official and city prefect, formally remained a secret Christian, but under the influence of the martyrs, he publicly confessed his faith.
Axentius, a priest of the Arabian church, was among the first to be captured during the persecutions. After a long imprisonment, he was beheaded.
Eugenes, a warrior and companion of Eustratius, endured horrific tortures for his faith: his tongue was torn out, his hands and feet were severed, and ultimately – his head.
Mardarius, a common man, upon witnessing the sufferings of Eustratius and others, confessed his faith. He was arrested and brutally tortured, including piercing his legs, hanging him upside down, and killing him with heated nails.
Orestes, a young warrior, also did not hide his Christian faith. He was sentenced to be burned on a heated metal grill. However, supported by the prayer of Eustratius, he bravely met his martyr's death.
Omens of December 13
If it is frosty and dry on Eustratius, winter will be harsh but snowy.
Fog or ice – expect a long cold winter.
Wind from the north – winter will be snowy and frosty, from the south – mild and thawing.
What Not to Do Today
It is not recommended to sweep or wash the floor, as this can drive away abundance from the home. A broom should not be left by the threshold, as evil spirits may steal it to 'cover' the sun. It is also advisable to avoid quarrels, as it is believed that anyone who breaks this rule risks bringing danger upon themselves.
What Can Be Done Today
Believers appeal to the holy martyrs Eustratius, Eugenes, Axentius, Orestes, and Mardarius in prayers, asking them for steadfastness in faith, inner peace, and patience to bravely face life's trials and walk the path of righteousness.
The Day of Remembrance of the Holy Martyrs reminds us of the martyrdom of those who endured terrible tortures for their faith. These examples of courage continue to inspire many believers who turn to the saints for support in difficult times. In remembering the martyrs, the community also adheres to the customs established around this day, seeking to preserve good traditions and piety.
