Experts reveal the algorithm of actions during skidding: what to do in the first second.
According to ТСН: Driving a car on an icy road requires special skills, as any mistake can lead to an accident. Auto experts note that successfully getting out of a skid depends on the driver's actions in the first second, when it is important to overcome panic and not succumb to instinctive mistakes.
What to do and what not to do in the first second
One of the main mistakes drivers make is reflexively pressing the brakes. On ice, this only exacerbates the situation, as locked wheels lose grip on the road, turning the car into an uncontrollable "ice block".
On slippery surfaces, the wheels instantly lock up, leading to a loss of contact with the road, and the car becomes uncontrollable. At this moment, the car moves forward only by inertia, and the driver cannot influence its direction.
The only correct action in that moment, according to specialists, is to immediately release the gas pedal. This will allow the engine to gradually slow down the wheel rotations and help them "grip" the surface again.
How to stabilize a car on a slippery road
After removing your foot from the accelerator pedal, it is important to act quickly, but without sudden movements. The process of stabilizing the car while skidding requires a clear sequence of actions, where each movement must be precise. To successfully navigate a critical situation, one should follow these rules:
Avoid braking
Until the car is completely leveled and returns to the intended course, using the braking system is prohibited. Any attempt to brake during a skid will strip the driver of the last remnants of control over the car. Only when the car is obedient again and stabilizes on the road can brakes be cautiously applied for further deceleration.
Adjusting direction with the steering wheel
The main tool for salvation is the correct use of the steering wheel, which should be directed in line with the movement of the rear axle. If the rear of the car skids to the left, the wheels should also be turned left, and if to the right, then right. This maneuver allows the front wheels to align parallel to the direction of the skid, providing necessary counteraction and helping the body to return to its natural position.
Control the intensity of movements
Effective steering should be quick in reaction, yet extremely smooth in execution. It is important to avoid chaotic jerking of the steering wheel, as excessive sharpness can lead to rhythmic skidding. In such a case, the amplitude of the oscillations increases, and the car starts to swing side to side with even greater force, raising the risk of rolling over or veering off the road.
Experts remind us that the best way to avoid skidding is to prevent it. To do this, one should avoid any sharp maneuvers, keep a safe distance, and choose a speed appropriate to the condition of the road surface. A calm mind and absence of sudden movements with your feet or hands are the keys to safety on winter roads.
It is important to remember that winter conditions require particular caution and attention from drivers. Applying these tips can protect you and other road users from dangerous situations. Stay vigilant and follow safety rules to ensure your trip is comfortable and safe.
