Scientists Decode the Secret Language of White-Tailed Deer: Ultraviolet Light

According to TSN.ua: Researchers from the University of Georgia have discovered that white-tailed deer communicate visually using ultraviolet light. These animals leave marks on trees and the ground that glow in the UV spectrum, enabling them to exchange information within their forest habitat. The three-month study was conducted in the Whitehall Forest in Georgia.

This discovery reveals a hidden layer of animal interaction invisible to the human eye. The team analyzed 109 tree markings and surveyed over 300 hectares of forest, identifying numerous deer urine traces. These UV-fluorescent marks may function as a kind of 'social network' for deer, helping them locate one another and interact during the rutting season, which runs from mid-October through December.

Researcher Gino D'Angelo noted that this form of communication is akin to "a phone booth in the city when you're trying to arrange a meeting for the evening."
