According to ТСН: Many Ukrainians incorrectly use some household terms, especially those derived from the Russian language. One such word is "перчатки". Experts explained whether this word is present in the Ukrainian language, as well as which variant is considered correct.

According to the resource "Горох", in Ukrainian dictionaries the word "перчатки" is considered a surzhik. This borrowing from Russian does not meet literary norms. Its use in official texts or public communication is incorrect.

The word comes from the Old Slavonic "перст", which means "finger". This form has been preserved in the Russian language, whereas it has not in Ukrainian.

What is the correct word

The correct Ukrainian term is "рукавички". It comes from the word "рука" and is recorded in all modern dictionaries. This variant is recommended for use in official documents, media, education, and cultural environments.

There is also a less common synonym – "пальчатки", which is formed from the word "пальці". Although its use is rarer, it also has Ukrainian origin and is considered correct.

In the Middle Ages, gloves were not only part of the wardrobe but also an important symbol. A knight throwing down a glove challenged his opponent to a duel, and the phrase "to throw down the glove" has survived to our time as a metaphor for challenge.

At the beginning of the 20th century, gloves were considered an essential part of a woman's image. They were made of thin leather, lace, or expensive fabrics, matching the outfit, and were worn even indoors.

Although the word "рукавички" may sound like a diminutive form from "рукавиці", these two concepts are different. Mittens are warm garments without division for each finger, whereas gloves have separate compartments for all fingers.

Currently, there is a growing interest in pure Ukrainian language in Ukraine, however, surzhik variants are still used in everyday communication.

Linguists remind us that it is correct to say "тістечко" instead of "пірожене", "цукерки" instead of "канфєти", "морозиво" instead of "морожене", "льодяник" instead of "лєденєц", and "пластівці" instead of "хлоп’я". Experts emphasize: correct language is an important part of Ukrainian self-identity.

In the context of modern society, it is important to preserve and promote the Ukrainian language, realizing its richness and beauty. The use of correct terms helps shape language culture and enhance language awareness among the population.

The purity of the language is a testament to respect for one's own culture and history, which can significantly influence the formation of national identity.
