Philosopher Chrysippus Died of Laughter: How a Stoic Became a Victim of a Rare Occurrence.
According to ТСН: The famous ancient Greek Stoic Chrysippus (279–206 BC) died at the age of 73 under unusual circumstances – from laughter. This information is provided by the historian Diogenes Laertius, describing several versions of the philosopher's death.
Origins and Career of Chrysippus
Chrysippus came from Soli (Cilicia) and moved to Athens in his youth, where he became a student of the Stoic Cleanthes. After the death of his mentor, he led the Stoic school and continued to develop the teachings of Zeno of Citium, earning the title of the 'Second Founder of Stoicism.'
Circumstances of Death
According to one version, the death occurred after a banquet when Chrysippus drank undiluted wine. Another, more famous version states that he, noticing a donkey eating figs, exclaimed:
'Now let the donkey drink pure wine, to wash down the figs!'and died of laughter. Diogenes Laertius notes that the philosopher
'died because he laughed too much.'
Chrysippus' nephew, Aristocreon, erected a statue in his honor in Kerameikos, the largest Athenian necropolis. After Chrysippus, his student Zeno of Tarsus succeeded him as head of the Stoic school.
Death from Laughter
Death from laughter is a rare occurrence that is typically associated with excessive strain on the heart or respiratory system. Intense laughter can provoke heart attacks, asphyxia, or asthma complications.
The story of Chrysippus’ death is not unique. In the 5th century BC, the Greek painter Zeuxis reportedly died of laughter after seeing his work. In modern times, there have also been cases of death from laughter, including a Thai ice cream vendor in 2003 and a Dane named Ole Bentzen in 1989.
Although laughter rarely becomes a direct cause of death, it can lead to dangerous consequences for people with severe health issues.
Currently, this story stimulates discussions about the impact of emotions on a person's physical state, emphasizing that sometimes even joyful moments can lead to serious consequences. The unexpected death of Chrysippus serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining balance in life and being aware of one’s physical capabilities.
