EU Approves €90 Billion Loan for Ukraine and Unveils 20th Sanctions Package.
Financial Support for Ukraine and Fresh Sanctions on Russia
According to TSN.ua: At the upcoming summit of EU leaders, the bloc is set to finalize a €90 billion loan for Ukraine alongside a twentieth round of sanctions targeting Russia. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has confirmed that Ukraine will receive these funds despite opposition from Hungary. However, Slovak Prime Minister Kaja Kallas pointed to lingering obstacles that could delay both the loan disbursement and the approval of the new sanctions package.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has voiced concerns over potential delays in the loan’s release.
“If the €90 billion is delayed, the country risks failing to prepare its energy system and physically protect critical infrastructure before next winter,”he warned. The urgency of securing these funds is underscored by the need to get ready for the cold months ahead.
Why New Sanctions Matter Now
A striking 45% of all Russian crude oil exports pass through the Baltic Sea, highlighting the strategic importance of imposing additional restrictions on Moscow. The upcoming EU summit represents a critical moment for advancing these measures. Ukrainian authorities are counting on continued support from European partners, as the loan is essential for maintaining stability and driving development amid the ongoing crisis.
For Ukraine, locked in war and economic turmoil, the €90 billion loan is a lifeline. It could help secure energy supplies and rebuild infrastructure before winter sets in. Meanwhile, the new sanctions package carries strategic weight, potentially weakening Russia’s economic leverage and bolstering Ukraine’s position on the global stage.
