Ukrainian Hero Details Torture and Coercion During Olenivka Captivity.
The Captivity of Serhiy Volynskyi
According to TSN.ua: Serhiy Volynskyi, a Ukrainian national hero known by his call sign 'Volyna', has described his harrowing experience as a prisoner in the Olenivka penal colony. In an interview, he detailed the torture and psychological pressure inflicted upon him and other captured service members, including marines, by the occupying forces. He recounted the appalling conditions and the methods used to intimidate the prisoners.
According to Volynskyi, the prisoners endured severe torture at Olenivka. He cited one instance where 200 soldiers from the National Guard's 'Azov' Brigade were moved to a separate barracks with extremely harsh conditions.
"Upon arrival, they stripped us, interrogated us, made us fill out forms, and distributed us among the barracks. And then the most interesting part began, when the interrogations, torture, and various other horrific stories started," he stated.
Appalling Conditions and Psychological Pressure
Volynskyi also spoke of an explosion that rocked Olenivka on the night of July 29, which resulted in the deaths of 53 soldiers. The interrogators were particularly focused on how the defenders had moved from the Illich Steel & Iron Works to the Azovstal plant.
"But that was no secret at all. Ultimately, all these interrogations boiled down to them demanding that we take responsibility for criminal cases regarding the shooting of civilians," Volynskyi emphasized.
He added that refusing to give false testimony was extremely difficult due to the immense psychological and physical pressure. This captivity experience left a deep mark on Serhiy Volynskyi and underscores the brutality with which the occupiers treated the marines. Accounts like his are crucial for documenting potential war crimes, as the Olenivka facility has been a focal point of international concern since the full-scale invasion began.
The ordeal of Serhiy Volynskyi sheds light on critical aspects of the war, including questions of humanity and international humanitarian law. In a context where military conflicts are accompanied by brutal crimes against humanity, such testimonies can form the basis for investigations and potential legal proceedings. By bearing witness to these events, individuals like Volynskyi play a vital role in documenting facts that could influence the international community's stance toward the aggressor.
