Iran Accuses U.S. and Israel of Striking Its Largest Gas Field in First Attack on Energy Production.
Strike on the South Pars Gas Field
According to TSN.ua: On March 18, 2026, Iran reported an attack by the United States and Israel on the South Pars gas field. This marks the first time since the start of the war that Iranian extraction facilities have been targeted. South Pars, the world’s largest gas field, is shared with Qatar and achieved a record output of 730 million cubic meters per day in 2025.
Iran’s Response and Its Consequences
In retaliation, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) released a list of energy sites in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar that it now considers 'direct and legitimate targets.' The list includes:
- the Samref refinery
- the Al-Hosn gas field
- the Al-Jubail and Mesaieed petrochemical complexes
- facilities in Ras Laffan
A spokesperson for Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs commented on the situation, emphasizing that
“attacks on facilities linked to the Pars field pose a threat to global energy security.”
Meanwhile, the IRGC issued a warning:
“All citizens, residents, and employees must immediately leave these areas and move to a safe distance.”
This attack and Iran’s response could have serious implications for regional stability and global energy markets, highlighting the ongoing tensions in this strategically vital region.
The escalation of conflict between Iran, the U.S., and Israel risks further destabilizing the Persian Gulf, where energy infrastructure already faces significant threats. Given the critical importance of the South Pars field to Iran and its regional partners, all sides must act with caution, as further strikes could endanger not only economic stability but also overall security. Developments on the ground could significantly impact the global energy market if the situation is not resolved through diplomatic channels.
