A Battalion Commander on Soldiers Who Desert and Return to the Ranks.
The Persistent Issue of Desertion on the Front Lines
According to TSN.ua: In an interview with TSN special correspondent Yulia Kyryienko, the commander of the first assault battalion discussed the ongoing challenge of unauthorized absence from military units at the front. He identified a specific category of soldiers who could be termed professional deserters, known as 'AWOL specialists'.
The Path Back to Military Service
The battalion commander, who uses the call sign 'Mayak', detailed the process for reintegrating personnel into his brigade. Soldiers who left their positions without authorization are given a chance to return to service. Those who wish to serve again undergo a two-month retraining program. During this period, they receive combat assignments, gather their equipment, and are then sent back to their units.
He also noted that a small percentage of individuals seek to rejoin a unit primarily to secure financial benefits. Consequently, these soldiers begin receiving a salary again, which can serve as an additional incentive for returning to military duty.
The problem of desertion remains significant in a high-stress combat environment where troops face extreme risks. The reintegration of former soldiers through structured training programs reflects the military's effort to maintain combat readiness and retain experienced personnel. In a protracted conflict, it is crucial not only to recruit new fighters but also to find ways to bring back those who left, which can bolster overall frontline stability.
