Lesia’s Successful Surgery

According to TSN.ua: A 52-year-old woman named Lesia from the Yavoriv district has undergone a successful, high-risk operation for a rare medical condition diagnosed by doctors in Lviv. The procedure took place at the University Hospital of Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University, where the medical team excised a 40-centimeter growth and a thrombus. The patient recovered swiftly following the surgery.

The Critical Role of Early Detection

The condition Lesia faced affects only 0.4% of women. An ultrasound scan played a key role in diagnosis, allowing doctors to identify the thrombus. Physicians note that the risk of complications from leiomyoma ranges from 0.25% to 0.4%.

The surgery was particularly challenging due to significant blood flow in the inferior vena cava, which raised the risk of hemorrhage.

“The difficulty of the operation lies in the high blood flow within the inferior vena cava. When we open this vessel, there is a major risk of bleeding,” explained cardiac surgeon Dmytro Beshlei.

Thanks to the surgeons’ expertise, they successfully removed the tumor and the associated thrombus, restoring normal blood flow through the inferior vena cava.

“This is a tumor process. So we decided to proceed with the operation,” commented physician Yuriy Orel.

This case highlights the importance of timely diagnosis and highly skilled medical staff in treating rare diseases. The hospital also recently performed surgery on a two-month-old girl named Olivia, who weighed just 6 kg, demonstrating the wide range of surgical cases handled by the facility.

The successful outcome not only saved Lesia’s life but also underscores the effectiveness of modern medical technology and the professionalism of the doctors—both essential in managing rare and complex illnesses. Such cases remind us of the value of access to quality healthcare and regular check-ups, which can dramatically influence treatment results.
