Ukraine Considers a Shift to Remote Learning

According to TSN.ua: In response to severe winter weather disrupting the school year, Ukraine's Ministry of Education and Science, along with local authorities, are urgently deciding whether to extend the winter holidays or switch to remote learning until February 1, 2026. This decision impacts the entire education system, from preschools to universities, as harsh conditions make in-person attendance difficult. Such weather-related disruptions are a recurring challenge for educational institutions during the Ukrainian winter.

Educational Ombudswoman Nadiia Leshchyk has urged school administrators in areas where holidays have already been declared to issue orders for a transition to distance learning for the same period. She emphasized the need to allow teachers the autonomy to choose their workplace while conducting remote lessons.

"This decision aligns with a resolution from Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers," Leshchyk noted.

Impact Across All Educational Levels

The potential extension of the break or move to online instruction applies to all educational tiers, including:

  • preschool
  • general secondary
  • vocational
  • professional pre-higher
  • higher education

To support working parents, the Kyiv City State Administration is required to organize emergency duty groups for school-aged children to ensure their care during this period.

Leshchyk also stated that 'the issue of the advisability of extending the temporary suspension of in-person education must be addressed immediately.' These measures aim to safeguard children's well-being and ensure the continuity of education despite the adverse weather. The situation highlights the education system's need for flexibility in adapting to variable conditions, particularly natural factors that can interrupt learning. Coordinated effort from all stakeholders is essential to maintain educational quality whether through remote instruction or an extended break.
