Frosts in Ukraine Reach Critical Levels: A Threat to Winter Crops

According to ТСН: Winter continues to gain momentum, and the coming days have not brought us cozy warmth. Due to the cool air from the east, temperatures in Ukraine will drop, and at night thermometers will show significant negative values.

This was reported by the head of the Cherkasy Regional Hydrometeorological Center, Vitaliy Postryhany.

Danger to the Crop

The main threat currently concerns not so much people, but future harvests. As noted by the chief forecaster of the region, the eastern part of Cherkasy, which makes up a fifth of the region, has remained without snow.

"This morning in Chyhyryn, agro-meteorologists recorded minus 10 degrees at the depth of the nodal rooting. This is already a critical temperature for the freezing of barley, poorly developed winter wheat, and rapeseed,"

– noted Postryhany.

In areas where there is snow (the west and center of the region with a layer of 5–12 cm), the situation looks more stable: soil temperatures range from -1 to -5 degrees, which is safe for plants.

Three-Day Forecast

Wednesday

An anticyclone from the Arctic will provide calm but frosty weather without significant precipitation.

  • At Night: minus 13 to 18 degrees.

  • During the Day: minus 7 to 12 degrees.

Thursday

The Hiltrud cyclone will try to make changes, its warm front will bring some light snow and ice on the roads.

  • At Night: minus 10 to 15 degrees.

  • During the Day: minus 3 to 8 degrees.

Friday

A serious restructuring of atmospheric processes will begin. Warm air masses from the west will be blocked, and we will begin to be influenced by the Siberian anticyclone.

"Dry, cold continental air will flow into our region unhindered. The Atlantic will not play a major role in the formation of the weather, but rather Siberia,"

– explained Postryhany.

This indicates the beginning of a long period of frost and lack of snow. The only consolation will be the bright sun during the day.

The forecaster also reminded that January is statistically the coldest month of the year, so such temperatures are normal for this period.

"Let's keep warm and stay strong. There are still 46 days until the desired spring,"

– added the specialist.

It is also worth noting that due to frosts and snow, serious complications may arise in Lviv Oblast. Regional authorities recommend that people prepare warm clothes, chargers, and stock up on drinking water.

The cold weather expected in the coming days may negatively affect not only people's health but also the agricultural sector. The lack of snow in the eastern part of Cherkasy creates risks for plant development. It is important to monitor changes in the weather as they may significantly impact the harvest and life in the region.
