Russia Upgrades Decoy Drones with Shrapnel Warheads, Escalating the Threat from 'Gerbera' UAVs.
Evolving Drone Warfare Tactics
According to TSN.ua: Russian occupation forces are altering their tactics for decoy drones by fitting 'Gerbera'-type UAVs with lethal shrapnel warheads. This modification significantly increases the danger posed by these systems, as the drones now carry 15-kilogram warheads derived from 152-millimeter artillery shells. Upon detonation, the shrapnel covers a wide area, inflicting severe damage. This development is part of a broader trend of adapting commercial and military technology for use in the conflict.
Deployment of FPV Drones
In Kharkiv, the use of fiber-optic guided First-Person-View (FPV) drones has been confirmed. These drones are capable of operating at considerable ranges, potentially reaching 40-50 kilometers. Experts warn that even a downed drone remains hazardous, as noted by military analyst Oleksandr Kovalenko:
“A downed drone is not a safe drone.” — Oleksandr Kovalenko
However, according to Ivan Kyrychevskyi, there is currently no basis to claim a fundamentally new level of threat to the city. Nevertheless, the tactical shifts in drone usage highlight the growing peril these evolving technologies present in modern warfare. The situation underscores the need for vigilance and the development of effective countermeasures to protect civilian populations from these aerial threats.
The ongoing use of unmanned aerial vehicles in Ukraine illustrates the rapid evolution of military technology and its impact on the battlefield. By changing their tactics, Russian forces aim to enhance the effectiveness of their assaults, creating new challenges for defense forces and civilians alike. Monitoring and analyzing these changes is critically important for formulating adequate defensive responses and protective strategies.
