Rome dance gala drops Russian ballerina Zakharova over her war stance.
Svetlana Zakharova removed from Les Etoiles lineup
According to TSN.ua: Organizers of the Les Etoiles dance gala in Rome have cut Svetlana Zakharova, a Russian ballerina, from the performance schedule. The decision came after they received official communications highlighting the symbolic responsibility cultural institutions bear in the current climate. Zakharova has publicly backed Russian President Vladimir Putin and the war in Ukraine, which prompted her removal from the program.
Born in Lutsk, Ukraine, Zakharova received her early training there. In January 2023, she was scheduled to perform at Florence's Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, but that appearance was also canceled. Since 2023, she has been under sanctions imposed by Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council. The gala organizers acknowledged that their move might be misinterpreted or exploited by others.
How political tensions are reshaping cultural events
Zakharova's exclusion from the gala highlights the growing impact of political developments on cultural programming. Such actions show that the arts world is responding to modern challenges by weighing the ethical and political dimensions of artists' public positions. As the conflict in Ukraine continues, similar cases may become more common, with cultural events facing increased scrutiny over their alignment with social and political standards.
